What is Google Talk?
Google Talk is still "in beta" - meaning Google is still adding and refining features - but it is promising to be a major player for free Internet calling. Google Talk combines instant messages and voice in one software package (Windows only). Google Talk is easy and intuitive to use. To make free calls you need an Internet connection, a microphone, and a speaker. The first thing you need to do is sign up for Gmail, Google's excellent free email service. After you download Google Talk, sign in with your Gmail username and password. Then invite your friends to download Google Talk, and once they do, you'll be able to talk or Instant Messenge with them. If they are using a different Instant messenger service, you may still be able to use Google Talk, because Google keeps the communication standards open as far as possible; the following protocols are supported on all major platforms (Mac OSX, Linux, and Windows): Trillian, GAIM, iChat, Adium, and Psi. |
