It all started with search. Now the guys and girls at Google have turned out an amazing collection of software - and give it away for free. Some programs are so well conceived, feature packed and fully web-integrated that they are truly groundbreaking, like free Google Earth and Gmail.
There is an exciting new trend in software design, and it is led by Google. We are talking about free online software. The advantages are many: automatic and relatively secure backup; no downloads or updates; easy sharing with friends and colleagues; good integration of packages (like Google docs and spreadsheets, or Sketchup and Google Earth). The other top Software4free recommendations are Gmail, Picasa and Desktop (don't let the "beta" tag put you off: Google is ultra conservative before it releases a title to 1.0 status). The idea is simple. It's a globe that sits inside your computer. You point and zoom to anyplace on the planet that you want to explore. Satellite images and local facts zoom into view.
Google Earth has a friendly user interface which lets you zoom very quickly to where you want to go.

Google Docs & Spreadsheets

Think of it as Word and Excel online - available from any connected computer, anywhere. And it's free. You can:

Create basic documents and spreadsheets from scratch.
You can easily do all the basics, including making bulleted lists, sorting by columns, adding tables, images, comments, formulas, changing fonts and more.

Upload your existing files.
Google Docs & Spreadsheets accepts most popular file formats, including DOC, XLS, ODT, ODS, RTF, CSV, etc. Upload your files; all your formatting and formulas will come through intact.

Familiar desktop feel makes editing easy.
Just click the toolbar buttons to bold, underline, indent, change the font or number format, change the cell background color and so on. Or dig a little deeper with functions, html, version history, sharing etc. Google Docs & Spreadsheets is deceptively powerful.

Google Sketchup

Drawing in 3D was never easy, until Google acquired Sketchup and improved on it - mainly to encourage people to model 3D buildings for Google Earth (a smart move, as it turned out; a large, free workforce having fun placing detailed architecture all over Google Earth).

SketchUp is 3D for everyone. Google SketchUp is software that you can use to create, modify and share 3D models. It's easier to learn than other 3D modeling programs, which is why so many people are already using it. SketchUp's simplified toolset, guided drawing system and clean look-and-feel were designed to help you concentrate on two things: getting your work done as efficiently as possible, and having fun while doing it.
