Gunz, the duel This shooting game is proof again that you do not need to pay for good software. Full-on action and fantastic graphics keep you glued to the screen for hours. The download is a hefty 131 Mb, but absolutely worth it. GunZ is a high-energy game that combines the controls of an FPS  with the wild stunt action of a third-person game to unload all kinds of action in the style of John Woo or movies like The Matrix.

Battle for Wesnoth
is a turn-based fantasy wargame that was released, after years of development time and much anticipation iin the gaming community, as a totally freeware game. The mechanics will be familiar to most gamers: recruit troops, move them around the map to battle enemy units, and conquer cities. You can create your own custom units, write your own scenarios, and even create full-blown campaigns. Battle of Wesnoth was more than a little inspired by Bungie's superb Myth, and the game benefits from this royal heritage. Assigning those personalities is a nice bit of variety for the game. A lot of attention went towards small details, such as the ability to assign individual personalities to unit characters. Battle for Wesnoth has a very active multiplayer community. A great attraction of the game is the enormous amount of user-generated content available. Accessible from a convenient in-game download system are tons of user-created campaigns and multiplayer levels that the gamer can work through. This level of additional content adds depth and gives Wesnoth unlimited replayability. The retro graphics and sound give Battle for Wesnoth a unique place among fantasy wargames. 
The game is licensed under the GNU public license which means it has the support of many contributors and will always remain free. |

CodeRED
is a series of games based on a campy, 50's era sci-fi theme. There are three games in the series. Battle for Earth and The Martian Chronicles are primarily single player games, while the latest, Alien Arena is multiplayer (you can play against bots). CodeRED's storyline is the typical "aliens are coming" plot, but in a first person shooter game like this a rich storyline is not required; the game play is what counts, and CodeRED has some of the best game play ever seen in a freeware FPS. While the game is based on Quake 2, it creates its very own mood with unique scenes, weaponry and play levels. It is fast-paced and the programming is excellent.  The graphics can be very realistic, especially in the 2006 Alien Arena release, and the sound effects are superb.
The source code is released under the GPL license which means it will remain free. |

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a multiplayer online first person shooter game. It is set in 1942 -- a year earlier than "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" -- and BJ Blazkowicz must uncover a Nazi plan involving giant cannons that can shell London from across the English Channel.
It's a team game; you will win or fall along with your comrades. The only way to complete the objectives that lead to victory is by cooperation, with each player covering their teammates and using their class special abilities in concert with the others. For instance, Covert Operative class allows players to steal uniforms, perform reconnaissance missions and gain access to enemy positions. The Engineer class allows the Axis and Allied teams to lay and diffuse mines as well as build battlefield bridges, towers and forward command bases. The game features multiplayer support for as many as 64 players, and the variety and depth of game modes, character classes, weaponry  and tactical skills will keep Wolfenstein gamers in the trenches for hours.

Prince of Persia 4D is a solid unofficial version of Jordan Mechner's classic action/adventure that starts off the same as the original version but will stump even action veterans with devious level design and tougher enemies in the later stages.
For the uninitiated: Prince of Persia was a smash hit when it was released in 1990, and is today still regarded as one of the best games ever made. The combination of fluid, lifelike animations, great Arabian-Night storyline, and devious physical traps and puzzles made it a revolutionary game for the time, and very challenging even to expert gamers. The tortuous difficulty level of this fanmade version makes it a perfect game for those who finished the original game and are looking for a real challenge to save the princess. A Flash version of Prince of Persia is available as an online game for Mac and Linux users.
