An active and growing online community provides friendly help, tutorials, and plugins. It started development as a college senior design project mentored by Microsoft. It was originally intended as a free replacement for MS Paint, but now it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing.

Another free Photoshop alternative: less powerful than the Adobe juggernaut, but more nimble, quicker to load and less resource hungry. It can even use the widely available Photoshop plug-ins.
